What is Vinyasa Yoga?

As if the term yoga isn’t intriguing enough, there are many different kinds of yoga to choose from - Ashtanga, Hatha, Iyengar, Bikram… the list goes on!

We’re all about Vinyasa Yoga at BodyMindLife.

Vinyasa Yoga can be described as movement linked with breath. It’s a dynamic practice that’s often more playful than other styles and we love it for its ability to lift the heart rate and help students slip into a moving meditation that benefits the body and mind.

The term Vinyasa is derived from “Nyasa” meaning “to place” and “vi” meaning “in a special way.”

Why practice Vinyasa Yoga?

Unlike many styles of yoga, Vinyasa doesn’t have a fixed system of movements.

The practice is dynamic and this freedom of movement resonates with students and teachers at all levels and from all walks of life. Vinyasa yoga can have a dance-like quality and when sequenced by an experienced teacher, you’ll walk out of the studio having had a full body workout but one that has worked to both strengthen and lengthen your muscles to create balance.

Vinyasa yoga encourages self-reflection and mindfulness. Our teachers guide students to be aware of each movement, breath and sensation, and every thought and feeling, to open up a window into who we really are and what we want in life.

This is how yoga becomes a practice of self-transformation and healing.

Health benefits of Vinyasa Yoga:

Vinyasa yoga is amazing in its ability to change how you feel. You can walk into class a little low or stressed out after the day’s events, and leave in a happier, more contented present.

“Most people have no idea how good their body is designed to feel.” - Kevin Traudeau.

More research comes out each year on the health benefits of yoga. There’s science behind how the practice improves flexibility, protects your spine and builds muscle strength, but also how it regulates your adrenal glands, helps you sleep, boosts your immune system and increases your self esteem, inner strength and gives peace of mind.

Some days you’ll feel like you’re flying through Chaturanga Dandasana and are poised in Dancer’s pose, on others it can feel frustrating and like you can barely lift your limbs.

The trick is to commit to your practice and just show up on the mat. When you dedicate time to yoga - at least three times a week - change will happen.
